A full-size fridge is heavy, awkward through doorways, and not something to walk down a staircase alone. It also cannot go in a bin or a standard skip, and most council collections either exclude fridges or cap them.

Why a fridge is not like other appliances

A fridge is the one household appliance you genuinely cannot deal with yourself, and the reason is the gas inside it.

Refrigerant handling in Australia is licensed. The Australian Refrigeration Council states that "any person who handles refrigerant or works on RAC equipment must hold a refrigerant handling licence", and that handling includes "decommissioning or disposing of RAC equipment where refrigerant is present". Doing it without the licence is a strict liability offence under the Ozone Protection and Synthetic Greenhouse Gas Management Regulations 1995.

In practice that means a fridge cannot be stripped for scrap on a driveway, and it is why a working fridge and a dead one follow different paths. We are not degassing anything ourselves. We collect the unit and take it to a licensed facility set up to do that part properly.

How to get rid of an old fridge in Sydney

There are three realistic routes, and which one works depends mostly on whether the fridge still runs.

• Council booked collection. Most Sydney councils run one, but fridges are among the items most often excluded or capped. Check your own council before you rely on it.
• A retailer taking the old one away. Many will remove the old unit when they deliver the new one, though usually only on delivery day and only for a like-for-like swap.
• Booking a removal. We collect from wherever it is, including upstairs and from apartments, and take it to a licensed facility.

If it still works, say so when you book. A working fridge has options a dead one does not.

What affects the cost

• Access. Ground floor with a clear run is quicker than a third-floor walk-up or a unit without lift access.
